Interpol-Wanted Crypto Fugitive Richard Heart Arrested in Istanbul
In a significant law enforcement operation, Turkish authorities have detained Richard James Schueler, known widely in the crypto community as Richard Heart, who is wanted by Interpol. His arrest took place on Wednesday in Istanbul and was conducted by a joint team from the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and local police forces.
Background on the Fugitive
Richard Heart had an active Red Notice issued by Interpol due to accusations of international crypto fraud, tax evasion, and assault. His notoriety increased after the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged him in 2023, alleging that he had engaged in unregistered offerings of cryptocurrency securities that amassed more than $1 billion from investors through his companies, including Hex, PulseChain, and PulseX.
Details of the Arrest
The operation to apprehend Schueler was the result of extensive intelligence work by both the Istanbul Police Department’s Intelligence and Anti-Financial Crimes branches, along with MIT’s support. Following thorough surveillance in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, law enforcement officials confirmed his location and proceeded with the arrest.
During the operation, both Schueler and his wife, identified only as A.K., were detained. Authorities discovered a cache of assets, including:
- A significant amount of cash in various currencies
- Multiple mobile phones
- Several laptops and graphic cards
- Firearms, including rifles and pistols
- Two drones
- Jewelry, including gold bracelets
Ongoing Investigation
With Schueler’s capture, investigations into his alleged criminal activities are expected to intensify. The International community is closely monitoring the case, given the scale of the fraud related to his crypto ventures. The SEC’s charges also highlighted serious concerns regarding his misappropriation of funds for extravagant purchases, including luxury cars and a notable 555-carat black diamond, dubbed ‘The Enigma’.
This successful operation underscores Turkey’s commitment to cooperating with international law enforcement agencies to combat financial crimes, particularly in the burgeoning field of cryptocurrency fraud.
