2023 World Gymnastics Championships: A Look Ahead to LA 2028
The World Gymnastics Championships, commencing on Saturday, October 17, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, serves as both a competitive platform and a precursor to the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Significance of the Championships
This year’s championships mark the first global team competitions since the 2024 Paris Games. Teams competing for medals will secure their spots for the Olympics in Los Angeles, making this event particularly significant as it sets the stage for Olympic contention.
For the U.S. women’s team, the championships represent a crucial moment in the Olympic cycle. The Americans have dominated women’s gymnastics globally, clinching the last seven team titles at the world level dating back to 2011, and maintaining a streak of at least one all-around medalist at every major competition since 2003.
Competition Schedule
Fans can tune in to watch the live events on Peacock and NBCSN as follows:
- Team Finals: Tuesday (Men) & Wednesday (Women)
- All-Around Finals: Thursday (Men) & Friday (Women)
- Individual Event Finals: Saturday and Sunday
Team Roster Updates
Hezly Rivera’s Withdrawal
Hezly Rivera, a promising member of the U.S. women’s team and the youngest American athlete at the 2024 Olympics, has withdrawn due to a left ankle injury. Rivera, a two-time U.S. all-around champion, was hopeful for competition but ultimately prioritized her health.
Her departure means the U.S. roster now features four gymnasts, including Skye Blakely, a seasoned competitor with prior world experience, and three newcomers: Claire Pease, Charleigh Bullock, and Reese Esponda.
Challenges Ahead
Despite being strong contenders, the U.S. team faces increased competition from other nations. Notably, a Russian team has recently won the European title, although three key gymnasts were unable to compete in Rotterdam due to visa issues. Additionally, China’s team has demonstrated strength, winning both the Asian Championships and Asian Games this year.
Chellsie Memmel, 2008 Olympic silver medalist and U.S. team leader, expressed confidence in the current roster, noting the depth in vaulting capabilities and the commitment to enhancing overall performance.
New All-Around Champion on the Horizon
This year’s competition will introduce a new all-around champion, as none of the previous Olympic medalists will participate. Biles and Suni Lee are absent, while Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade will not compete in all events.
Team members Pease, Blakely, and Bullock will each attempt to secure a place in the all-around final, a significant test of their preparation and resilience on the senior global stage.
