Incident Overview
A heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, when a pickup truck crashed into a youth soccer game. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to nearly a dozen more, as reported by local authorities.
Casualties
The two victims who lost their lives were identified as Cole Adrian, a 6-year-old boy, and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Both were residents of McPherson, Kansas, but were not related. In addition, ten others, with ages ranging from 5 to 68, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment, according to Police Capt. Aaron Moses.
The Event
The distressing incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m., as a dark Chevrolet pickup unexpectedly drove onto a soccer field, colliding with both children and adults present at the game.
Witness Erica Case described the moment just before the crash began. She recalled hearing an engine revving, followed by what she thought were gunshots but later realized were horrific sounds made as the truck struck multiple individuals. “The moment that I recognized that that wasn’t gunshots, that that was bodies, I lost it,” Case stated, clearly shaken by the traumatic experience.
Witness Accounts
Another eyewitness, David Griekspoor, who was attending with his nephew, recounted the chaos: “It sounded like small gunfire… You look up, and you just see the truck going through a line of people.” He emphasized the urgency of the situation as he and others tried to ensure the safety of children nearby.
The response from bystanders was swift, with some assisting the injured until emergency services arrived approximately ten minutes later. Case highlighted the efforts of unnamed individuals, saying, “There are a lot of silent heroes that I know experienced much worse than I did.”
Investigation and Response
Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the incident. The driver of the pickup, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, has been taken into custody but was subsequently released after consultations with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. As of now, no charges have been filed against her, and she has not been publicly identified.
The woman, who had two children in the vehicle, reportedly had a child participating in a soccer game on another field at the complex. Police have stated that they are waiting for the results of toxicology tests on the driver, as well as examining the vehicle itself, to determine the cause of the crash.
