Historic Milestone: Equal Prize Money for Women at the Italian Open in 2027

In a groundbreaking shift for professional tennis, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that starting in 2027, the Italian Open will award equal total prize money to its female and male competitors. This announcement reflects nearly six decades of advocacy for gender equality in sports, sparked in part by a significant disparity in prize earnings in 1970.

A Look Back at Disparity

Billie Jean King often references her 1970 victory at the Italian Open, where she earned just $600, while Ilie Nastase secured $3,500 for the men’s title. This disparity became a catalyst for King’s ongoing efforts to establish the women’s professional tennis circuit, ultimately leading to the formation of the WTA in 1973.

Equal Prize Money Milestone

With this new initiative, all combined WTA 1000 events will offer equal prize money—a significant achievement in the quest for financial parity in tennis. Prior to this, only a few events, including the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, had not implemented equal prize structures.

Current Status of Prize Money

As of 2023, the Italian Open offered a total of $9.6 million in prize money for men’s competitions and $8.3 million for women’s tournaments. The new commitment aims to eliminate this disparity, ensuring all players receive equal financial recognition for their achievements.

Expanding Opportunities

The WTA has also announced plans for an expanded WTA 250-level tournament in Manila, Philippines, driven by the rising interest in local player Alex Eala, currently ranked 18th in the world. This initiative follows the hosting of a WTA 125-level tournament in the Philippines earlier this year.

Streamlining Tournament Commitments

In addition to the prize money announcement, there will be changes to the tournament schedule starting in 2027. The number of annual WTA 500-level tournaments required for players ranked in the top 50 will decrease from six to four, resulting in a base commitment of 14 WTA tournaments plus the four Grand Slams.

Player Feedback and Calendar Flexibility

WTA chair, Valerie Camillo, emphasized the importance of this change, noting it represents the association’s ongoing commitment to enhance competitive and financial equality for its athletes. Third-ranked player Jessica Pegula echoed this sentiment, stating, “As players, we’re on the road most of the year, so having more flexibility in our schedules and commitments makes a real difference.”

Looking Forward

The updates announced will serve as a one-year pilot for 2027, allowing the WTA to assess their impact across the tour and inform future decisions for 2028 and beyond. With these steps, the WTA is poised to set a new standard for equality in professional sports, encouraging greater participation and recognition of female athletes.
