Microsoft Secures Exclusive Streaming Rights for Grand Theft Auto VI
In a recent all-hands meeting, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced to employees that Microsoft is poised to unveil a unique opportunity concerning Grand Theft Auto VI that sets it apart from competitors. According to insiders familiar with Microsoft’s strategy, the company has secured exclusive game streaming rights for the highly anticipated title.
Exclusive Streaming on Xbox Cloud Gaming
This agreement means that only the Xbox Cloud Gaming platform will permit streaming of Grand Theft Auto VI at its launch. However, details regarding the duration of this exclusivity remain undisclosed. Notably, Rockstar Games has yet to announce a PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI, positioning Xbox to effectively promote its cloud gaming service to PC gamers who might not own an Xbox Series X/S or a PlayStation 5.
Changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming
The announcement of these streaming rights follows shortly after Microsoft revealed significant limitations regarding Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting in November, the same month Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release, streaming hours will be restricted to:
- 15 hours for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers
- 10 hours for Premium subscribers
- 5 hours for Game Pass Essential users
New Access Options for Gamers
In a shift designed to broaden accessibility, Microsoft is introducing a pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming, effective next month. This flexible approach allows gamers without an Xbox console, or those who primarily use mobile devices, to stream games like Grand Theft Auto VI by purchasing a bundled set of hours.
Upcoming Xbox Hardware Developments
Additionally, during the meeting, Sharma provided updates on Project Helix, which aims to introduce a new generation of Xbox hardware. This initiative is characterized as a “family of devices,” indicating potential partnerships with other companies to develop innovative gaming solutions. This announcement came after a previous declaration of a strategic partnership between Microsoft and AMD, aimed at creating a future portfolio of gaming devices.
With the dual announcements of exclusive game streaming rights and new subscription models paired with hardware advancements, Microsoft is positioned to redefine gaming engagement ahead of the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
