Yemeni Government Forces Launch Major Counter-Offensive Against Houthis
In a recent social media update, the Yemeni government announced the successful execution of over 2,100 targeted military operations aimed at Houthi positions across multiple fronts. These efforts are part of the large-scale counter-offensive codenamed “Dawn of Yemen.”
Significant Military Achievements
The government claims that these operations have resulted in the neutralization of approximately 1,860 Houthi fighters. Officials emphasize the retaking of strategic locations, particularly in western Taiz, which has been crucial for military advancements.
Rashad al-Alimi, the chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, detailed the operation’s aim to reclaim all territories under Houthi control, including the capital city of Sanaa, which has been held by the Iran-backed group since 2014.
Strategic Importance of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait
Recent clashes have predominantly occurred around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route that has gained further significance due to disruptions from US-Iran tensions regarding oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz. Yemeni government-aligned forces initiated operations to gain control over areas surrounding this strategic waterway and the city of Mocha, which fell to Houthi forces last month.
Coalition Support and Counteractions
The Saudi-led coalition supporting the Yemeni government has reported the destruction of 82 military targets belonging to the Houthis in various Yemeni governorates, including Saada and Marib. These targets include vital assets like ballistic missile sites and command centers.
These military actions come in response to recent Houthi attacks on key locations in Saudi Arabia, specifically targeting airports in Riyadh and Abha, resulting in civilian casualties and international condemnation.
International Reactions and Ongoing Negotiations
In light of the attacks on Saudi territory, several regional governments, including Kuwait and Egypt, expressed their condemnation, labeling the strikes as violations of international law. Meanwhile, discussions continue at the United Nations, as Yemen’s representatives seek to address the humanitarian implications of the ongoing conflict.
During talks with Hans Grundberg, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Abdullah al-Saadi, expressed that the Yemeni government aims for a comprehensive resolution to the war, rejecting temporary ceasefires that may lead to further hostilities.
