YouTube Clarifies Dislike Button Changes Amid Misconceptions
On Tuesday, discussions emerged suggesting that YouTube was experimenting with hiding the dislike button on its platform, mainly due to shared screenshots by users on the social media platform X. However, a spokesperson from YouTube has clarified that the company is not currently testing any such feature for its general user base.
Clarification from YouTube
YouTube spokesperson Kimberly Taylor provided a statement to The Verge on Wednesday, emphasizing that the platform is not looking to hide the dislike button from users. Instead, she noted that there are plans to implement a new user interface specifically for creators regarding their own uploaded videos.
“We are not testing hiding the dislike button on YouTube for users. We’re introducing a new UI for creators on their own uploaded videos, where dislike is behind the three-dot menu, and as always, they can find their full dislike counts in Studio, alongside other analytics,” said Taylor.
Upcoming UI Changes for Creators
According to Taylor, the updated interface will be rolled out to creators in the coming weeks. This initiative aims to streamline how creators manage feedback on their videos while still providing access to dislike counts in YouTube Studio. Users will still be able to view and interact with the dislike button within the three-dot menu, although it will not be as prominent.
Background on Dislike Button Adjustments
This adjustment follows prior changes made by YouTube concerning the dislike feature. Notably, the platform made headlines in 2021 when it decided to hide public dislike counts in an effort to mitigate harassment. Furthermore, in early 2023, YouTube also removed the dislike button from its Shorts format.
Conclusion
With these clarifications, it’s evident that YouTube continues to refine the user experience while remaining committed to transparency for creators. The upcoming UI changes mark another step in this ongoing evolution of the platform’s functionalities.
