Updated: October 2, 2026 19:25 IST

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – On October 2, 2026, K Annamalai emphasized the importance of women’s active participation in politics during a commemorative event honoring K Kamaraj’s legacy. He urged women to step forward as candidates in the forthcoming local body and Assembly elections under the banner of the “We The Leaders” initiative.

K Kamaraj’s Legacy

During the event, Annamalai recognized the contributions of former Chief Minister K Kamaraj, noting his pivotal role in the expansion of education within the state and the establishment of numerous schools. He mentioned that Kamaraj’s influence continues to resonate in public life, decades after his passing.

Efforts of the “We The Leaders” Movement

Annamalai highlighted the movement’s accomplishments, including the clearance of approximately 6,000 metric tonnes of waste across Tamil Nadu. Additionally, he outlined initiatives aimed at restoring water bodies and rivers that have suffered environmental degradation over the years. A significant goal of the movement includes planting 50 lakh (5 million) trees, with an impressive 13.7 lakh (1.37 million) already planted to date.

Addressing Safety Concerns

On the issue of increasing violence against women and children, Annamalai stated that Tamil Nadu has seen a rise in sexual assault cases over the past five years. He advocated for stronger measures to safeguard women and children. Referring to a recent case involving the owner of Gem Granites, he mentioned that the accused had been detained several years after the crime, and the Goondas Act had been applied in this instance.

Upcoming Initiatives

To bolster awareness and empowerment, Annamalai announced the organization of a marathon on October 11 in Avinashi, focusing on women’s and children’s safety. Additionally, an Abdul Kalam Centre is set to launch on October 15 as part of the movement’s efforts.

Promoting Women in Governance

Encouraging greater female representation, Annamalai remarked on the Tamil Nadu government’s inclusion of eight women in the Cabinet, highlighting the need for increased representation of women in governance. He expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to implementing a 33% reservation for women in Parliament, expressing confidence that women will gain further representation in key leadership roles. He stated, “Men and women are equal. If we come to power, we will provide 50 per cent representation for women in governance.”
