The Rise of Fiber: Essential for Women’s Health

While protein has enjoyed its moment in health discussions, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a recognized OB-GYN and expert in nutrition and obesity medicine, anticipates that fiber is poised to become the new front-runner in dietary conversations. During a segment on TODAY, Ashton proclaimed, “Fiber is the new protein.”

Understanding Fiber and Its Benefits

Fiber, a component found in numerous plant-based foods—including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds—is crucial for maintaining good health. Despite its availability and numerous benefits, Ashton points out that many people fail to meet their daily fiber needs. She notes that women should consume approximately 20 to 30 grams of fiber daily, while men typically require between 30 to 38 grams, according to various dietary guidelines.

The Significance of Fiber for Women in Menopause

Fiber plays a multifaceted role in health, contributing to digestive wellness and cardiovascular health. Its influence extends beyond these areas, impacting metabolism, immune function, and even hormonal balance. Ashton emphasized the value of both soluble and insoluble fiber:

  • Soluble Fiber: This type dissolves in water, creating a gel-like substance that can help manage blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
  • Insoluble Fiber: This fiber adds bulk to the stool and aids in moving food through the digestive system.

For women experiencing menopause, Ashton highlights the role of fiber in regulating estrogen levels through the gut microbiome, specifically through what is known as the “estrobolome.” This emerging area of research suggests that gut health plays a significant part in hormone regulation, underscoring the importance of adequate fiber intake.

Dr. Ashton’s High-Fiber Breakfast

To kickstart her day, Dr. Ashton advocates for a fiber-rich breakfast, preparing a bowl in advance to ensure she begins with substantial nutritional support. Each morning, she combines flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and wheat germ with soy milk, adding a half-cup of raspberries, which offers about 15 grams of fiber—more than half of the recommended daily intake for many women. This meal not only provides fiber but also offers plant-based protein and healthy fats.

Strategies for Incorporating More Fiber into Your Diet

To achieve daily fiber goals, it’s beneficial to start with high-fiber foods early. Here are some strategies to boost fiber consumption throughout the day:

  • Add berries, chia seeds, or ground flaxseed to oatmeal or yogurt.
  • Choose whole-grain cereals which are higher in fiber.
  • Incorporate beans or vegetables into egg dishes for added nutrition.
  • At lunch and dinner, include lentils, beans, whole grains, and a variety of vegetables.
  • Snack on nuts and seeds to further enrich your fiber intake.

Ashton advises diligently tracking your fiber intake to ensure you meet nutritional targets. “Actually do the math so that you know you’re getting your 20 grams, your 30 grams,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of being conscious about dietary choices.
