BlackRock and Calamos Shape the Future of Bitcoin ETFs
Recent Developments in Bitcoin Investment Funds
As the cryptocurrency market evolves, financial institutions are continuously adapting their strategies. Notably, Calamos Investments launched its first series of protected bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in early 2025. These funds offer two distinct options for investors: full downside protection and loss limits set at 10% or 20% over a specified timeframe.
Calamos’ Innovative Fund Structures
Calamos allocates approximately 90% of the fund’s assets to U.S. Treasuries, utilizing the remaining portion to purchase bitcoin-linked options. This framework enables investors to profit from Bitcoin’s appreciation up to a predetermined cap while simultaneously limiting potential losses. Oddly enough, while some traditional spot bitcoin ETFs experienced outflows recently, Calamos reported attracting between $10 million and $15 million to its protected bitcoin funds in just a few weeks, as stated by Matt Kaufman, the firm’s head of ETFs.
BlackRock’s Strategic Moves in Cryptocurrency Investments
Meanwhile, BlackRock is also diversifying its offerings in the bitcoin market. In June 2025, the company introduced the Bitcoin Premium Income Fund (BITA), which combines holdings of bitcoin with shares of an index fund tied to bitcoin. This fund sells call options on a significant portion, specifically 25% to 35%, of its portfolio to create a source of monthly income.
“There are investors across the spectrum … looking to generate some amount of income off of still having a mostly large, mostly long position to bitcoin,” said Jay Jacobs, BlackRock’s U.S. head of equity ETFs, during discussions with CoinDesk at that time.
Comparing the Approaches of Calamos and BlackRock
While Calamos’ emphasis lies on protecting investors from downturns in bitcoin’s value, BlackRock appears to focus on generating income without fully sacrificing exposure to the cryptocurrency. This divergence in strategy reflects a growing demand in the market for innovative products that cater to different investor needs amid fluctuating bitcoin prices.
Conclusion
As interest in bitcoin investment continues to rise, companies like BlackRock and Calamos are developing unique solutions tailored to the evolving landscape. Investors will have options that not only seek to capitalize on bitcoin’s potential upside but also incorporate protective measures against its volatility.
