Nor’easter Expected to Affect Atlantic Coast: Coastal Flooding and Gusty Winds on the Horizon
Storm Overview
A strengthening nor’easter is developing hundreds of miles off the Atlantic coast, forecasted to bring multiple days of gusty onshore winds and coastal flooding. Some areas may experience rain, particularly affecting Cape Cod.
Rain and Wind Impacts
While the heaviest rainfall is expected to remain offshore, coastal regions, particularly the eastern United States, could still feel significant effects from gusty winds and coastal inundation.
Flood advisories are already in effect stretching from the Jersey Shore to the Outer Banks, with forecasted inundation levels reaching 1-2 feet due to persistent onshore winds.
Areas at Risk
Cities and towns along the coastline from New Jersey down to Cape Hatteras are preparing for adverse conditions, including beach erosion, rough waters, and gusty winds.
In the coming days, Cape Cod and Nantucket are expected to face rainfall and coastal flooding, with rough surf and rip currents expected to intensify by Thursday.
Potential Development into a Tropical Storm
There is a possibility that the nor’easter could develop into a tropical storm, which would only intensify as it moves further east from the coast. Current projections indicate a 40% chance of such a development both in the next two and seven days, which would name the storm Josephine if it occurs.
Wind Forecasts
Wind speeds are anticipated to be particularly impactful, with Nantucket expecting gusts up to 44 mph. Virginia Beach could see winds reaching 32 mph, and Cape Hatteras is predicted to experience gusts around 39 mph.
Other Weather Events
In addition to the nor’easter, a separate storm in the Pacific is projected to introduce heavy rainfall, flooding, and mountain snow. Areas from Southern California to the Rockies are under a flash flood warning.
The forecast for California and parts of the Southwest indicates a flood threat persisting through Thursday, specifically affecting regions from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara, as well as the Four Corners states.
Flood Watches Issued
Approximately six million residents across Arizona, including those in Phoenix and Flagstaff, are currently under flood watches due to these anticipated conditions.
