Blue Origin Enhances New Glenn Rocket with Significant Upgrades
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.—In a pivotal announcement made at the UP.Summit conference, Blue Origin revealed two fundamental enhancements to its New Glenn rocket. These advancements promise to lower manufacturing costs and increase payload capacity for missions targeting both geostationary orbit and lunar exploration.
Demand for Launch Services
During his keynote address, Blue Origin’s CEO, Dave Limp, emphasized the unprecedented need for launch services, stating, “There has never been higher demand for launch, ever.” The company’s strategic goal is to enable New Glenn to conduct over 1,000 launches annually.
Innovative Engine Development
One of the most noteworthy aspects of the upgrade is the development of a new rocket engine named Northstar. This engine is designed to replace the current BE-4 engine that powers New Glenn’s first stage. Initial test firings of Northstar have already commenced.
Northstar Engine Features
- Contains 50% fewer components compared to the BE-4 engine.
- Weighs 30% less.
- Approximately 65% of its parts can be manufactured using 3D printing technology.
Limp indicated that these efficiencies could result in manufacturing costs that are only 25% of those for the BE-4 engine. Ultimately, the goal is to streamline the assembly process so that an engine can be built in less than a day.
A New Stage for Increased Capability
Alongside the Northstar engine, Blue Origin is also working on a hydrogen-oxygen third stage known as GS3. This addition aims to enhance the rocket’s ability to deliver payloads into specific orbits or to the Moon.
Performance Expectations
The current BE-4 engine generates a thrust of 640,000 pounds, while the Northstar engine is set to provide a starting thrust of 715,000 pounds. Similar to its predecessor, Northstar will utilize a staged combustion cycle, burning methane and liquid oxygen, managed through a single-shaft turbopump configuration.
Continued Support for ULA
Although Blue Origin is moving forward with the Northstar engine, production of the BE-4 engine will continue to support United Launch Alliance, which utilizes it in its Vulcan rocket.
Looking Ahead
As Blue Origin implements these improvements, the company underscores its commitment to lowering the cost of access to space. “To get access to space at a lower cost, we have to look at every part of the vehicle,” Limp remarked. “This is going to be a game-changer.”
