Capcom Unveils Future Enhancements for the RE Engine
October 2023
Introduction to the RE Engine Evolution
Capcom, renowned for its franchises like Resident Evil and Street Fighter, is embarking on a significant transformation of its RE Engine. The company aims to incrementally evolve the engine into an “AI-generation game engine.” This initiative was a focal point during the company’s recent technical conference, the ‘Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026.’
Key Presentation Highlights
On October 2, programmer Satoshi Ishida delivered an insightful presentation titled ‘The Outlook and Future of the REX Project, Further Evolving the RE Engine for the Next Generation.’ This presentation outlined several critical enhancements aimed at improving the RE Engine through a multi-phase initiative dubbed ‘REX.’
Current Challenges in Game Development
During the presentation, Ishida highlighted three primary challenges that Capcom is currently facing in game development:
- The increasing size and complexity of games, making simple processes time-consuming.
- The necessity for an easily navigable engine as staff numbers grow.
- The critical need to integrate AI technology into production workflows to streamline future development.
Introducing the REX Project
According to a report by GameBiz, the REX initiative was established to enhance various aspects of game development, including performance efficiency, development tools, and quality assurance. Rather than developing an entirely new engine, Capcom intends to implement gradual improvements to elevate the RE Engine for the next generation.
The Role of AI in the Future Development Workflow
As part of the REX enhancements, Capcom plans to make some components open-source, particularly to facilitate AI training. The long-term vision is to create an environment where AI assists in game creation rather than outright generating assets. By aligning the RE Engine with “the world’s most common programming language,” Capcom seeks to simplify usability for developers and AI alike.
Capcom has stated its intention to utilize artificial intelligence primarily to optimize game development processes. “We will not implement assets generated by AI into our games,” Capcom clarified during a shareholders meeting in March 2026. “However, we plan to proactively use it as a contributing technology to improve the efficiency and productivity of the game development process. To this end, we are currently exploring ways to implement it in various areas, including graphics, sound and programming.”
Future Outlook for Resident Evil and Beyond
This development follows recent statements from Resident Evil’s executive producer, Jun Takeuchi, who indicated that the series is preparing for future releases as their remakes catch up to contemporary gaming standards. This strategic approach involves focusing on “two tracks” of development to ensure the franchise remains relevant.
Capcom’s Recent Successes
The current year has been noteworthy for Capcom, which has introduced several acclaimed titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Additionally, the company has two major film adaptations in the pipeline: Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, and a Street Fighter film from Legendary Pictures, both set for theatrical release on October 16, 2026.
