Essential Insights on Midlife Fitness from Michaela Bentley

At the age of 60, Michaela Bentley has mastered the art of training, eating, and recovering effectively. However, her journey to achieving this balance was not always straightforward. In her late 40s, Bentley experienced significant changes in her body that challenged her longstanding fitness routines.

“As someone who’s always maintained a pretty high level of fitness, that all came to a crashing halt in my late 40s,” Bentley shared on Instagram. She noted that she began to gain weight despite adhering to her usual workout and dietary habits. “I was putting on weight and couldn’t figure out why,” she recalled. This experience prompted her to reassess her approach to fitness, especially for women navigating midlife changes.

Key Lessons Learned in Midlife Fitness

1. The Importance of Repetition in Resistance Training

Many individuals believe that fitness requires variety, but Bentley emphasizes the value of repetitive exercises. “You don’t need a completely different workout every time you train,” she states. Repeating key movements helps in practicing technique, building muscular strength, and tracking progress. Sarah Campus, a personal trainer and nutrition coach, agrees: “If you’re doing completely different workouts every week, you’re not building strength.”

2. Focus on Effort Rather Than Exact Rep Ranges

The effectiveness of a workout does not lie in hitting a specific number of repetitions. Instead, Campus suggests that “what matters more is that you are challenging your muscles” and ensuring that the last few reps are difficult yet maintain proper technique. Incorporating progressive overload—gradually increasing weights or training volume—is essential for continuous improvement according to Bentley.

3. Adhering to a Structured Program

Random workouts may lead to random outcomes. A well-structured program is fundamental for achieving fitness goals and promoting progressive overload. “Consistency and progression are far more valuable than constantly chasing the latest fitness trend,” says Campus, urging adherence to a program for a minimum of six months to a year.

4. Enhance Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)

For those aiming to lose fat, increasing daily activities such as walking or house chores can significantly assist with weight management. Bentley describes walking as “one of the most underrated tools for fat loss,” as it raises daily energy expenditure without exhausting the body. Campus also highlights simple actions like taking the stairs as valuable contributions to overall activity levels.

5. Valuing Recovery

Effective training requires adequate recovery time. Both Bentley and Campus stress that “more training isn’t always better.” Prioritizing components such as sleep, nutrition, and rest days can improve performance. Bentley recommends resting at least two minutes between challenging sets to maximize efforts during workouts.

6. Indulgences Are Okay

In the context of long-term habits, an occasional treat will not derail progress. Campus points out, “A meal out, birthday cake or a weekend treat isn’t going to undo weeks of regular training and healthy eating habits.” Bentley echoes this sentiment, encouraging flexibility in diet and the importance of returning to routine following indulgences.

7. Consistency Over Motivation

Achieving fitness goals isn’t solely about staying constantly motivated. Building sustainable habits that integrate into one’s lifestyle can lead to long-term success, even when motivation wanes, say both experts.

8. Caloric Awareness Remains Important

While calorie balance is essential for weight management, it is not the only factor to consider. Bentley explains that total calorie intake plays a critical role in fat loss, while Campus clarifies that food quality, protein intake, fiber, portion sizes, sleep, and overall activity levels also matter for maintaining a sustainable diet.

As Bentley reflects on her journey, these insights serve as valuable guidance for those seeking to enhance their fitness as they navigate midlife changes. Both Bentley and Campus offer their expertise to help women build effective fitness routines tailored to their needs.
