Pianist Rescued at Sea After Nearly Nine Hours of Survival
Newport Beach, California – A musician from Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship, the Ovation of the Seas, was successfully rescued from the Pacific Ocean on Friday after being discovered nearly 20 miles offshore.
Discovery and Rescue
The unidentified pianist was found by local fishermen Sean Norton and Grant Garrett while they were returning from a marlin fishing expedition near Catalina Island. The rescue occurred around noon when they spotted a person treading water.
“I thought it was a human being and said, ‘Stop the boat; let’s get all of our lines in,’” Garrett recounted during an interview with CBS News.
After securing the pianist on board, he expressed his relief, saying, “Thank you. I thought I was gonna die,” as recounted by Norton.
Time in the Water
Authorities estimate that the man may have been in the water for approximately nine hours before the fishermen’s timely intervention. Following the rescue, he was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
Newport Beach lifeguards were then alerted to the situation via an emergency maritime call placed by Garrett and Norton, shortly after they pulled the man from the ocean.
Battalion Chief Adam Yacenda noted that the individual had been located “pretty much in the middle of the ocean,” approximately 15 to 20 miles offshore.
Survival Factors
Norton indicated that the unusually warm water temperature, recorded at around 76 degrees Fahrenheit, likely played a significant role in the pianist’s endurance. “With this crazy super El Niño year, a different year, no way he makes it,” he commented on the favorable conditions.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances leading to the pianist’s overboard incident are currently the subject of investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard. Royal Caribbean has acknowledged the event and is providing support to the employee during this challenging time.
A spokesperson for the cruise line stated, “We are providing support and assistance to our crew member during this difficult time. To respect the privacy of our employee, we have no additional details to share.”
