The Rise of Stablecoins Among Banking Consortia
Strategic Advantages of Stablecoins
Payment firms are increasingly looking towards their own stablecoins to streamline merchant settlements, facilitate cross-border payouts, and manage customer balances through a unified infrastructure. This approach may enhance liquidity management by reducing reliance on third-party settlement providers.
The Challenge of Adoption
While the technical process of issuing a stablecoin is relatively straightforward, gaining acceptance among businesses remains a significant hurdle. The success of stablecoin adoption hinges on a payment company’s ability to convince businesses to integrate and utilize this new form of currency.
Competitive Landscape
Payment companies that already possess a robust merchant network and established distribution channels may hold a distinct advantage in this evolving landscape. These organizations can leverage existing customer relationships to facilitate the practical use of stablecoins.
Banking Consortia Initiatives
In response to the growing adoption of stablecoins, banking consortia in both the U.S. and Europe are working on their own initiatives. The fear of losing payment flows and customer funds has prompted banks to explore regulated stablecoin solutions.
For instance, in Europe, Qivalis has formed a coalition of 37 financial institutions from 15 countries to develop a compliant euro stablecoin. Similarly, a global consortium comprising 21 financial institutions, such as Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, and Wells Fargo, announced plans in September 2026 to launch a U.S. dollar stablecoin in the first half of 2027, with plans to issue a euro stablecoin as well.
Opportunities for Financial Institutions
These banking initiatives stand to enhance the ability to provide round-the-clock settlement services while maintaining control over customer deposits. There appears to be significant potential in the realm of institutional payments and the settlement of tokenized assets—areas where banks already possess established relationships and existing infrastructure.
