Major Accident on I-10 East in New Orleans

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is currently managing a significant vehicular incident on Interstate 10 East, just near North Claiborne Avenue. This crash has disrupted traffic significantly, leading to the closure of multiple lanes.

Details of the Incident

A dump truck was involved in the accident, which resulted in it falling off the elevated stretch of I-10 close to the Esplanade exit. The incident led to the blockage of the two right lanes of the interstate.

As a consequence of the crash, Claiborne Avenue at Columbus Street (eastbound) and the Esplanade exit on I-10 Eastbound remain closed while authorities assess the situation and conduct necessary investigations.

Injuries Reported

Emergency response teams transported both the driver and passenger of the dump truck to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, their conditions are reported to be stable.

Traffic Impact and Alternative Routes

At present, only the left lane of I-10 East is open to traffic. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. Those traveling towards Slidell or New Orleans East should consider taking I-10 to West End and then switching to I-610 as a diversion.

Damage and Inspection

Authorities reported that a parked car near the site of the incident suffered damage due to the truck’s fall; however, no individuals were inside the vehicle at that time. Additionally, engineers from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) are on location, inspecting the bridge and addressing the damage to the barrier before proceeding with the reopening of the interstate.

Official Statements

Mayor Helena Moreno expressed relief regarding the incident, stating, “This was an incredibly serious accident and I’m incredibly grateful that no lives were lost. I want to thank our first responders, medical professionals, and all the crews working on the cleanup effort for their swift response and hard work to keep everyone safe.”
