Discord Enhances Discoverability for Public Servers
Overview of Upcoming Changes
Discord is set to implement a significant update that aims to increase the visibility of discussions within its largest public servers. Starting November 16, all Discoverable Servers, defined as those with a minimum of 1,000 members, will feature dedicated Server Web Pages. These pages will include essential details about the server, such as a brief description and summaries of the dialogues occurring in public channels.
Search Engine Visibility
By mid-December, users may find messages posted in these public channels appearing in search results, akin to how Reddit threads are indexed. Importantly, while content will be searchable, individual usernames and avatars will not be displayed, thereby maintaining a level of anonymity for contributors.
Concerns Over Privacy
This initiative is exclusive to Discoverable Servers, meaning private servers, direct messages, and group chats will remain confidential. However, following recent backlash regarding age verification measures, this update may stir further conversations about privacy on the platform.
Opt-Out Options for Server Admins and Users
Admins of Discoverable Servers can take proactive steps to exclude certain channels from being indexed. Moreover, individual users can safeguard their posts from being included in search results. These settings can be adjusted in the Data and Privacy section of Discord’s User Settings. Additionally, for users in specific regions—such as the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea—messages will be turned off by default to comply with local regulations. Users in these areas must manually opt-in to activate the feature.
Furthermore, for Discord’s teen users, channel messages will remain inaccessible until they reach adulthood, ensuring extra layers of protection for younger community members.
