Elon Musk Takes Aim at Mukesh Ambani Amid Starlink Delays in India
SpaceX’s efforts to introduce Starlink satellite internet service in India have encountered significant hurdles, prompting Elon Musk to publicly criticize Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Musk, in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), implied that Ambani possesses considerable sway over the Indian government, dubbing him the country’s “prime minister” in a satirical remark aimed at highlighting his perceived monopolistic power.
Musk’s Critique of India’s Regulatory Environment
In his ongoing critique, Musk articulated that Starlink could revolutionize internet access, especially in underconnected regions, emphasizing the potential benefits for children’s education and small businesses. He questioned Ambani’s opposition to competition, stating,
“Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?”
Response from the Indian Government
Musk’s allegations coincided with comments from India’s Ministry of Communications, which dismissed claims of favoritism in the regulatory process for satellite communications. The ministry emphasized that its framework is “fair and non-discriminatory,” addressing Musk’s accusations of oligarchs obstructing Starlink’s entry.
Earlier this week, Musk questioned the extent of Ambani’s influence by asking,
“Is Ambani the real boss of India?”
The Status of Starlink in India
Starlink has been attempting to commence commercial services in India for several years. Despite signing distribution agreements with major telecom companies, including Ambani’s Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, regulatory hurdles have prevented its launch. Currently, the Indian government is conducting comprehensive security assessments for Starlink and two other licensed satellite operators, with no preferential treatment given to any party.
Both Reliance Jio and Airtel are also in the process of rolling out their satellite internet services. Reliance Jio has partnered with SES, while Airtel holds a significant stake in Eutelsat OneWeb, both aiming to establish a presence in India’s burgeoning satellite connectivity market.
Musk’s Broader Challenges in India
India represents a substantial market opportunity for SpaceX and Musk’s other ventures, including Tesla. However, both companies face challenges navigating the competitive landscape, particularly with influential figures like Ambani. Despite the anticipation surrounding Tesla’s launch in India, the company reported only 699 vehicle deliveries in its first year, largely due to high import duties that inflated prices.
In response to Musk’s previous criticisms regarding the allocation of satellite spectrum, the Indian government opted for an administrative process to assign the necessary spectrum to Starlink, as opposed to an auction favored by Jio.
Conclusion
The future of Starlink in India remains uncertain, with regulatory approvals still pending. India’s telecom minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, reiterated on Friday that the nation does not support monopolies in any sector. As Musk continues to voice his frustrations on social media, the path forward for SpaceX’s ambitious plans rests on navigating the complex interplay of local regulations, industry competition, and political influences.
