Bitmine to Cease ETH Accumulation as Holdings Near Limit
In a significant development for the cryptocurrency market, Bitmine, a treasury firm focused on Ethereum assets, is poised to limit its acquisition of Ether (ETH). With the current valuation of ETH around $2,565.52, this decision signals a shift in one of its primary sources of demand.
Bitmine’s Future Strategy
Tom Lee, the chairman of Bitmine, announced during a presentation at TOKEN2049 in Singapore that the firm plans to stop acquiring ETH once its holdings reach 5% of the token’s circulating supply. This strategy imposes a definitive cap on a buying trend that has established Bitmine as one of the largest holders of Ethereum.
“We only need to get another 100,000 ETH to get to 5%,” Lee stated. “Now we’re going to stop,” he added.
Current Holdings and Market Impact
As of Bitmine’s latest report, the firm has amassed approximately 6,016,414 ETH, equivalent to roughly 4.9% of the total circulating supply of 122.1 million tokens. The total value of this substantial holding is estimated to be around $15.5 billion, based on current market prices.
Achievements in a Challenging Environment
Lee emphasized the speed at which Bitmine has reached this milestone, noting:
“We thought this would take five years. It took us a little over a year. More importantly, we did this all in the middle of a bear market.”
Conclusion
The planned cessation of ETH purchases by Bitmine could reshape the demand landscape for Ethereum in the near future. As the firm approaches its self-imposed accumulation ceiling, stakeholders and investors will be watching closely to assess the impact on the price and market dynamics of the cryptocurrency.
