Tragic Triple Homicide in Happy Valley Identified
HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. (KATU) — The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the identities of three individuals found deceased in a family home on Tuesday: Katie Kinder, 47; her son Evan Kinder, 15; and her mother Patricia Campbell, 78. This discovery came shortly before investigators located Edward “Ed” Villa, Katie’s boyfriend and the prime suspect in the case, who was found dead by apparent suicide in a motel near the Oregon coast.
Initial Welfare Check Leads to Discovery
Authorities first initiated a welfare check after Katie Kinder failed to report to work on Monday. Officers responded to the family residence but received no reply when they attempted to establish contact with anyone inside. During their preliminary investigation, they noted no apparent signs of trouble, and neighbors reported not seeing anyone at the home for several days.
At approximately 12:30 PM, employees from Katie’s workplace entered the house, where they subsequently called the police for assistance. Upon entering, officers discovered the bodies of Katie, Evan, and Patricia inside the home.
Search for the Suspect
Following the tragic discovery, law enforcement obtained an arrest warrant for Edward Villa, charging him with three counts of first-degree murder. Law enforcement agencies statewide were enlisted to help locate him. The Warrenton Police later traced Villa’s vehicle to a motel in Hammond, Oregon. Officials from the U.S. Marshal Service’s Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force surrounded the motel, urging Villa to surrender. Tragically, it was reported that Villa died by suicide shortly after officers arrived.
Family’s Heartfelt Statement
The family of the victims released a poignant statement reflecting their immense loss:
“Our family is living through a nightmare that no family should ever have to experience. In one heartbreaking tragedy, we lost three beautiful people — my mother, my sister, and my nephew. There are no words strong enough to describe the pain, grief, and devastation we are feeling. These were not just three lives lost. They were our family, our loved ones, and an irreplaceable part of our lives.”
The family’s message continued, detailing the unique qualities and loving memories associated with each individual, emphasizing the lasting impact of their lives on those who knew them. They expressed a desire to prevent the tragedy from overshadowing the love and joy each person brought into their lives.
Reflections on Loss and Calls for Support
The family’s statement resonates deeply with those grappling with similar tragedies, urging the community to remember the love and joy the victims shared rather than solely focusing on the circumstances of their death. They asked for thoughts and prayers from the community as they navigate the complexities of grief.
As the community mourns this tragic loss, support services remain available for anyone struggling with similar issues. There are resources for mental health and domestic violence assistance for those in need.
