Heroic Action by Oregon Father During School Shooting
In a recent interview, an Oregon carpenter, Kaylub Giamanco, recounted his harrowing experience during a school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend. Giamanco, 36, is being praised nationwide for his decisive actions that prevented further bloodshed during the tragic incident.
Incident Overview
On October 15, Giamanco was at home for lunch with his wife when he witnessed a former student armed with a gun entering the school premises. The shooter, identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, opened fire inside the establishment, resulting in the death of Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher, and three young children, including five-year-old Rhoam Summer.
Taking Action
Initially assuming the situation was a prank, Giamanco quickly realized the severity when he saw the shooter fire his weapon. Without hesitation, he retrieved his .40 caliber handgun from his vehicle and called 911 while making his way toward the school. Demonstrating remarkable courage, he followed the shooter into the building, stealthily navigating the surroundings while hearing children’s cries for help.
“I just started army crawling faster and faster and I told myself this is probably the last thing that I’m ever going to do,” Giamanco shared in his interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).
Confrontation with the Shooter
Upon entering a classroom where the shooter was engaged in a struggle with a teacher, Giamanco intervened by firing his weapon at John, who was reaching for his own gun. Concerned for the safety of the remaining individuals, he shot the assailant twice more to neutralize the threat.
Reflections and Aftermath
Despite his actions saving many lives, Giamanco expressed deep remorse for those who were lost during the shooting. “I want to apologize for not saving their babies,” he stated. The emotional toll of the incident continues to weigh heavily on him as he struggles with memories of that fateful day.
In light of the tragic events, Giamanco advocates for increased school safety measures, calling for the presence of resource officers on campuses to help prevent such incidents in the future. He aims to raise funds to support initiatives that enhance the safety of schools across the region.
