Companies Oppose Tokenized Stock Trading on OKXICE
As reported recently by Reuters, financial giants such as Wells Fargo, Arm Holdings, and Intuit have added their names to a list of companies that oppose the trading of tokenized stocks on OKXICE. This trading venue is a joint venture between the Intercontinental Exchange and OKX, and the recent actions have brought the total number of objectors to 22. The specific details of the objections have yet to be fully disclosed, with more companies remaining unnamed.
Tokenization and Objection Process
OKXICE operates under a five-year exemption granted by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which permits tokenized stock platforms to function without being classified as traditional exchanges. When a company’s stock is set to be tokenized, the venue must notify the company in writing and wait for a minimum of 30 days. If the company raises an objection during this period, trading of the token is halted, and the venue is required to publish an updated notice of this objection within five business days.
Recent Surge in Objections
The current number of objections has escalated swiftly. As recorded in an October 15 notice, nine companies, including Broadcom, Verizon, and UnitedHealth, initially raised concerns. By October 19, this number increased to 16, with additional industry players such as Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and Alphabet joining the ranks of objectors.
Future of Tokenized Stock Trading
OKXICE’s ambitious plans initially included offering tokens for 63 different stocks, but the timeline for launching these tokens remains unannounced. Notably, some technology behemoths like Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Amazon have not yet indicated any objections.
Furthermore, OKXICE intends to utilize Uniswap v4 pools on its XLayer platform, pairing stock tokens with stablecoins. Trading will be limited to wallets that possess a specific soulbound token issued by the venue, while also noting that it has not sought SEC registration for these activities.
