AI Advancements Could Accelerate Grand Theft Auto 6 PC Release
Insights from an Industry Expert
Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar Games North, has sparked discussions around the potential for AI-assisted ports of Grand Theft Auto 6. In a recent interview with RockPaperShotgun, Vermeij expressed that advancements in generative AI could urge Rockstar to expedite the release of a PC version of the highly anticipated title.
Concerns Over AI-Generated Ports
Vermeij mentioned the implications of AI that could enable individuals to transform the PlayStation 5 version of the game into a PC version, albeit with inferior quality to the developers’ original work. He stated, “I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC, which won’t be as good as [the developer’s] effort, but it could still also hurt their sales.” He suggested this potential risk might lead to a closer timeline for the game’s various releases.
The Role of Generative AI
While Vermeij acknowledged a lack of insider information about Rockstar’s current strategy, he affirmed his belief in the capabilities of generative AI tools. He noted that while the process of creating a PC port via AI would require significant resources and time, it remains feasible. “It will take a long time. It actually, physically takes hours and hours and hours to do these things,” he added, indicating the extensive computational demands involved, which could amount to substantial costs.
Current AI Trends in Gaming
The industry has already witnessed various attempts to utilize AI technologies in gaming. Fans have been experimenting with AI software to enhance trailer footage of Grand Theft Auto 6, yielding impressive results that have captured significant attention on social media platforms. Notably, the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is confirmed to be free from generative AI elements and microtransactions at launch.
Broader Implications of AI in Game Development
The challenge posed by AI-generated game clones is an ongoing concern within the gaming industry. Developers have even taken precautions, such as canceling public demos, due to fears of imitation. Valve, the owner of Steam, emphasized that game developers must enhance the originality of their creations to mitigate these risks. Despite efforts from companies like Anthropic to curb cloning practices, other AI applications remain capable of executing such tasks.
