Google Messages is currently experimenting with a significant redesign that includes new aesthetics for pinned chats and a revamped search feature on the homepage.
Redesign of Pinned Chats
In this redesign, pinned chats are visually elevated within the interface. Rather than merely being listed at the top of the conversations, these chats will now occupy a more prominent, distinctive space above other messages.
Previous Layout

This new design utilizes the existing background area that previously only displayed the logo, search bar, and account settings.
In addition, larger contact photos will be positioned above all chats, creating a more spaced-out look. However, this layout mirrors features from iMessage on iOS and may sacrifice previously visible details, such as message history and last sent timestamps.
Search Feature Transformation
Concurrently, Google is testing an innovative search feature that will function as a floating action button (FAB) situated in the center of the screen. This new button will appear alongside options for starting new chats.
When users scroll down, they will notice the “Search” feature represented in a pill-shaped button, which will become more streamlined as they navigate the app.
This update is particularly advantageous for one-handed use, simplifying navigation. However, it remains uncertain whether Google will replace the existing Gemini FAB with this update.
These features are currently being tested in the beta channel and are not yet available for the general public.
