Attack on Greek Orthodox Church in Jordan: Key Developments

Amman, Jordan — In response to the tragic shooting incident at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hammoud, Jordanian authorities arrested three individuals believed to be involved in the attack that claimed nine lives and left over two dozen injured.

Details of the Arrest

The arrests occurred early on Monday morning, following a shootout in Karak governorate, south of Jordan’s capital city, Amman. The Public Security Directorate reported that the suspects engaged in fierce resistance during the operation, resulting in their own injuries. Fortunately, none of the security personnel were harmed during the encounter.

Understanding the Attack

The attack unfolded during a funeral service on Friday at the Greek Orthodox church, which serves a small Christian community in the region. Accounts suggest that three men executed the deadly ambush.

Official Statements

Jordan’s Interior Minister, Mazen Al-Faraya, confirmed that the suspects were swiftly identified and apprehended by security forces. In a conversation with state television Al-Mamlaka, Al-Faraya emphasized the commitment of security services to their duties, stating, “The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act… They put up fierce resistance against the security forces, but were ultimately subdued and taken into custody, having sustained severe injuries.”

Investigation Status

As of now, there has been no official claim of responsibility for the attack, and the suspects have not been linked to any specific militant groups. The directorate, reinforcing their stance against terrorism, noted that these individuals faced their “just fate.” They have not disclosed the suspects’ identities or connections to broader militant activities.

Calls for Action

In light of the incident, King Abdullah II called for a stringent response against those who disrupt the peace within Jordan, referring to them as “outlaws of Islam.” This statement underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining national unity and security.

The aftermath of the attack has left a profound impact on the local community, with mourners gathering in large numbers to pay their respects to the victims, highlighting the area’s resilience amidst tragedy.

Conclusion

The violence at the Greek Orthodox church represents a broader struggle faced by minority communities in the region. As Jordanian officials work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
