Asian Cup 2027: Preparations Continue Amid Security Concerns
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the organizing committee for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia confirmed that preparations for the tournament remain on schedule, despite recent security incidents in the region. The tournament is set to take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027.
Organizers’ Assurance
In a statement released on Friday, the Saudi organizing committee emphasized their ongoing collaboration with the AFC. They assured that work on venues, facilities, and supporting services is advancing as planned, with the goal of providing a world-class experience for teams, fans, and media from across Asia. The statement read: “Preparations across all organizational and operational areas are progressing according to the approved schedule.”
Security Concerns Emerge
Recent missile and drone attacks attributed to Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have raised alarm regarding security in the host country. These incidents have included strikes on key sites such as the Riyadh international airport and oil facilities, resulting in at least 19 fatalities, including foreign nationals.
In light of these developments, the South Korean Professional Footballers’ Association expressed apprehension over the safety of athletes competing in the championship. Lee Keun-ho, head of the association, remarked, “The continued military tensions and security instability in the Middle East are issues that can never be taken lightly. The safety of our national team, as well as all players participating in the Asian Cup, is a serious concern.”
Impact on Sporting Events in Saudi Arabia
The recent increase in military conflict has already affected several sporting events in the country. Notable cancellations and relocations include:
- Netflix’s “Six Kings Slam” tennis tournament
- The WTA Finals, which have been moved to the U.S.
- Matches involving Al-Nassr, a prominent soccer club featuring Cristiano Ronaldo
- An Olympic qualifying event for BMX cycling
