Unusually High Tides Impact Waterfront in Redondo Beach
Residents and business owners near King Harbor in Redondo Beach are grappling with the effects of unusually high tides that have flooded sidewalks, causing disruptions to waterfront businesses. This phenomenon has raised alarm as many locals report never having experienced such conditions before.
Flooding Conditions Reported by Local Residents
According to witnesses, water from the bay has breached sidewalks, leading to significant concern among those living and operating businesses in the area. Chris Martz, a 72-year-old lifelong resident, noted, “Been at the marina for 15 years and I’ve lived here my whole life, I’m 72, so I’ve never seen anything like this in my whole life.”
Boat owner Natasha Nelson observed that the area’s water levels were markedly higher than usual, stating, “Only at this time of day, I would be able to see 3 feet below that sidewalk line…but as you can see, we’re already passed up the sidewalk.” This observation reflects the notably altered landscape due to elevated water levels.
Impacts on Local Businesses
Establishments like BALEENkitchen encountered direct impacts from the flooding, necessitating the use of buckets to remove water from the restaurant’s interior. The business temporarily halted operations until 2 p.m. to address the situation.
Community Adaptations
In contrast, some locals found a silver lining among the adverse conditions. Dog owner Sam remarked on the unique experience for pets at the park, noting, “it’s fun because the dogs can never get in the water…they can come in and out on their own.”
Weather Patterns and Predictions
Experts from NOAA have indicated that this El Niño season is anticipated to strengthen throughout the winter months, with water temperatures now exceeding those recorded during the notable events of 2015 and 1997-98. Chris Martz emphasized that the current conditions differ from previous El Niño occurrences, noting, “Other El Niño years haven’t necessarily come along with very high tides.” He explained that the current situation is intensified by waves coming from the equator, contributing to higher tidal events.
Preparedness for Upcoming Events
Despite the challenges posed by the flooding, residents are proactively preparing for what may lie ahead. Natasha Nelson highlighted the community’s vigilance: “We’re all keeping really good track of the tide and the storms…this winter we’re all just gonna be…making sure that we’re in a safe place, not going out at the wrong time.”
With heightened tide levels and a forecast for king wave events expected in November and December, local businesses and residents remain on alert, anticipating impacts during the bustling holiday season of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
