The Future of Financial Markets: Tokenization and 24/7 Trading
Unlocking Capital through Tokenization
At the recent TOKEN2049 conference held in Singapore, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman highlighted the transformative potential of asset tokenization within the global financial system. She emphasized that this innovative approach could release tens of billions of dollars currently tied up as collateral in various assets.
Friedman explained, “If you tokenize all those instruments along with the flow of money, then the collateral becomes very fluid.” This process involves converting traditional financial assets, such as U.S. Treasuries, equities, and money market funds, into digital tokens that facilitate quicker and easier transactions via blockchain technology.
Institutional and Retail Interest in Tokenization
There has been a notable surge in institutional interest in tokenization over the past year, largely attributed to the enactment of the Genius Act in the U.S., which provides a regulatory framework for stablecoins. Friedman noted, “If we can tokenize money, then we can tokenize the flow of capital.”
This increasing institutional focus aligns with the longstanding demands of retail investors, who have been eager for 24/7 trading opportunities. Friedman remarked that the retail market is approximately a decade ahead in this regard, pushing for more accessible trading environments.
The Transition to Around-the-Clock Trading
Advancing toward continuous 24/7 trading presents significant challenges for the financial sector. According to Friedman, while the exchange infrastructure is already in place, institutions need to adapt their internal processes to function continuously, including risk and collateral management. “Everything has to be real time all the time,” she stated.
Artificial intelligence plays a critical role in facilitating this transition. Nasdaq has initiated the deployment of digital agents within its risk management platform to offer recommendations, with future capabilities suggesting direct actions by banks. “AI is critical for 24/7,” Friedman concluded.
Global Interest in Capital Market Access
Beyond U.S. borders, there is growing interest from companies seeking to leverage tokenization to gain access to American capital markets. Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, mentioned instances, including businesses generating around $25 million in revenue, exploring avenues for public listings and capital market entry.
Despite the enthusiasm for continuous trading, Friedman cautioned that not all assets possess the liquidity necessary to support a 24/7 trading model. However, she underscored that increased connectivity could enhance access to previously inaccessible asset classes for a broader range of investors.
