Ken Kutaragi Discusses the Shift to Digital Gaming
Insights on Discontinuation of Game Discs
Ken Kutaragi, known as the founder of PlayStation and the mind behind the first three consoles, recently addressed concerns about Sony’s decision to phase out physical game discs. During his talk at the Game Republic New Horizons event, Kutaragi referred to public dissatisfaction as primarily a “mentality issue”.
“I understand that physical discs have become a metaphor for ‘owning’ games. I really understand that mentality,” Kutaragi stated. However, he argued that it is not “economically reasonable” for Sony to continue producing them, especially in an industry trending towards digital solutions.
Digital Ownership and Changing Perspectives
In his comments, Kutaragi compared physical media to networked devices like smartphones, which users commonly accept without reliance on physical media. He remarked, “Nobody thinks [physical media] is necessary for a networked device like a smartphone because people feel that they will keep their content. So it’s a mentality.”
He acknowledged the emotional aspect of the transition, recognizing that many gamers feel perturbed by the loss of physical media, which has historically represented game ownership.
The Future of PlayStation
Having retired from PlayStation in 2007, Kutaragi reflected on the current direction of the company. “I’m not the CEO at PlayStation anymore, but we still have some common viewpoints,” he mentioned, hinting at ongoing connections within the industry.
He suggested that Sony may be moving toward an all-digital console, a reflection of broader technology trends. “Maybe that’s how those people are thinking,” he said, but acknowledged that this evolution has created tension among gaming enthusiasts.
Concerns About Hardware Costs
In addition to discussing digital gaming trends, Kutaragi raised concerns about the soaring costs of gaming hardware, particularly amid ongoing component shortages. He described the current state of pricing as “super expensive and that’s not a healthy situation,” corroborated by recent reports indicating that memory and storage for the anticipated PlayStation 6 could exceed $680.
The Role of AI and Cloud Computing
Kutaragi’s forward-looking advice centers on leveraging artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies. He suggested that these advancements could eventually eliminate the need for physical consoles altogether, stating, “We won’t need any console.” This perspective on the future of gaming may not align with traditional views, but it highlights a significant shift in how gaming may be experienced in the coming years.
