Pope Leo XIV Cancels Planned Visit to Assisi Peace Meeting
The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XIV will not attend the upcoming “Unarmed and Disarming Peace” meeting scheduled for October 27 in Assisi. This decision follows the Pope’s recent thoracic surgery and is aimed at ensuring his continued recovery.
Details of the Cancellation
In a statement released by the Holy See Press Office on Friday, it was made clear that the Pope’s medical team has advised against travel during his recovery period. The surgery, which took place on October 13, involved the removal of the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung due to malignant lung adenocarcinoma. Fortunately, subsequent tests confirmed that all the cancerous tissue had been successfully removed and no further treatment is needed.
Health Update
Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora conducted a scheduled follow-up chest X-ray, affirming that the Pope’s postoperative recovery is progressing well. Nonetheless, they emphasized the importance of caution and recommended that he refrain from undertaking the planned helicopter journey to Assisi.
“Unarmed and Disarming Peace” Meeting Overview
The peace meeting is organized by the St. Egidio Community, running from October 25 to 27, and commemorates the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1986. This year’s gathering aims to foster dialogue and understanding among various religious and cultural leaders.
The event is expected to see participation from 384 individuals representing diverse religions and institutions across 53 countries. Discussions will revolve around critical topics such as disarmament, conflict resolution, migration, poverty, youth issues, and the vital role of religions in promoting peace.
Papal Message During the Meeting
Despite his absence, Pope Leo XIV will convey a message highlighting his support for the meeting’s objectives. He will express solidarity with the “organizers, the leaders and representatives of Christian denominations and other religions, and the guests attending.” The Pope remains committed to the pursuit of peace and the ongoing dialogue symbolized by the “Spirit of Assisi.”
As the Pope continues to focus on his recovery, the Vatican reassures the public of his dedication to fostering peace efforts worldwide.
