Sony to Launch Dedicated Anime Hub on PS5 in 2027
In a recent announcement at the inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum, Hideaki Nishino, head of PlayStation, revealed exciting news for anime enthusiasts in the PlayStation community. Starting in Spring 2027, the PS5 will feature a dedicated anime hub directly integrated into its main menu.
Enhancing Accessibility for Gamers
Nishino stated that this new initiative aims to “make it easier for the PlayStation community to discover and explore the anime content they enjoy.” Currently, PS5 users can access Crunchyroll via the dedicated app, but this integration will place the service more prominently on the console.
Sony’s acquisition of Crunchyroll for $1.1 billion in 2021 highlights its commitment to expanding its anime offerings and reinforcing its presence in the entertainment sector.
Bridging Anime and Gaming
“Anime and gaming have deeply engaged and overlapping fan communities, and the new experience will bring those worlds closer together on PS5.”
This statement underscores Sony’s strategy of aligning gaming and anime, leveraging their complementary fanbases to enhance user engagement.
Future Projects and Growth Strategy
Additionally, Sony is developing its own anime series based on the popular game Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, expected to premiere next year. This initiative is part of a broader strategy, as the company recognizes anime as a crucial avenue for growth in its transition to a more diverse entertainment provider. With its subsidiary, Aniplex, Sony is positioned as a significant player in the anime industry.
