Michael Saylor Hints at Continued Bitcoin Purchases Amid Strategic Moves
Recent Statements and Anticipated Actions
Strategy chair Michael Saylor recently teased investors about the company’s ongoing activities in the Bitcoin market, stating, “There’s always room for more orange” in a social media post. This message has stirred interest as investors await further updates, although official communication through the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is not expected until Tuesday due to federal offices being closed for the Columbus Day holiday.
Bitcoin Acquisitions and Stock Repurchases
In a significant financial move, Strategy concluded September by investing over six times its weekly Bitcoin purchasing budget. During the period from September 28 to October 4, the company acquired 334 Bitcoin for a total of $28.7 million, increasing its total Bitcoin holdings to 848,000 BTC, as documented in an SEC 8-K filing dated October 5.
Additionally, Strategy executed a substantial repurchase of approximately 1.77 million shares of its STRC preferred stock, amounting to $176.3 million.
Strategic Cash Management for Future Purchases
The recent moves by Strategy can be interpreted as a strategy to accumulate cash now with the potential for future Bitcoin acquisitions. Independent analyst Shanaka Anslem Perera observed that the company raised $5.41 billion from issuing new common shares during the third quarter. By the end of this period, Strategy had increased its Bitcoin reserves by 1,666 BTC compared to June.
In his latest newsletter focused on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, Perera explained that the company allocated 9.5% of the raised funds directly for Bitcoin acquisitions, with the remainder going toward a dollar reserve, cash holdings, dividends, and preferred stock buybacks.
Investor Considerations
Perera emphasized the importance of understanding how these financial maneuvers affect shareholders. He highlighted that “bitcoin per share is only part of the answer,” indicating that cash reserves, as well as the claims of debt and preferred shareholders, are also crucial factors to consider.
He stated, “During the third quarter, Strategy raised billions through share sales, but much supported cash reserves and preferred shareholders. Raising capital does not necessarily mean buying bitcoin.” However, he reassured that retained cash could facilitate future Bitcoin purchases and ultimately strengthen the balance sheet, benefiting shareholders.
