Shawn Oliver Suspends Campaign Following DUI Arrest
Republican candidate for Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor, Shawn Oliver, has decided to suspend his campaign after being involved in a drunk driving incident that resulted in multiple parked vehicles being hit in New Bedford.
Details of the Incident
Oliver was arrested on Saturday night and spent the night in custody at the Ash Street Jail, a facility operated by the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office. He was released the following morning and returned to his home, located just a few miles away from the jail.
Visual accounts of the incident suggest that Oliver’s vehicle crossed onto the opposing lane, colliding head-on with a parked car before overturning and impacting several other vehicles. This crash comes merely 17 days ahead of the highly anticipated general election scheduled for November 3.
Suspension of Campaign
In a public statement, Oliver expressed gratitude to his supporters while prioritizing the significance of the upcoming election over personal issues. He stated, “After careful consideration, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor. This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Party Support and Accountability
The Massachusetts Republican Party (MassGOP) reacted positively to Oliver’s decision, with Chair Amy Carnevale emphasizing the need for accountability. “The MassGOP supports the decision of Shawn Oliver to suspend his campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Lives were put at risk, and that is never acceptable. We now stand to assist Shawn in getting any help he needs to ensure he never puts himself or others in harm’s way again,” Carnevale remarked.
Oliver’s running mate, GOP gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, also expressed disappointment and called for immediate action. He stated, “I am extremely disappointed. Shawn is lucky to be alive and lucky that no one innocent was hurt. There is no excuse for driving under the influence.” Minogue further urged Oliver to focus on his family, noting that he would formally request Oliver’s resignation if they were elected.
Current Situation
Despite the suspension of his campaign, Oliver’s name will still be listed on the ballot for the upcoming election. As the days progress, further information, including a police report related to the DUI incident, is anticipated to be released to the public.
In the wake of this situation, Oliver’s family, as indicated by his wife, is seeking privacy during this challenging time, as she mentioned he was “very hurt” by the recent events.
