Arthur Hayes Predicts AI Overcapacity Will Boost Crypto Markets
Former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes has weighed in on the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, projecting an outcome of over-investment, subsequent market corrections, and a potential bailout that he believes could benefit cryptocurrencies. During a discussion at the Gamma Prime Investing Conference in Singapore, Hayes expressed concern over the massive capital being funneled into AI data centers, alleging it amounts to a “multi-trillion dollar” waste.
The AI Infrastructure Boom
As technological firms strive to secure the necessary computing power to advance AI applications, Hayes argues that this rapid expansion of data center infrastructure is on track to create an oversupply. He stated, “If you study financial history and you study every single major technological rollout, it always is overbuilt. There always is a crash, and there always is a bailout.”
Historical Context and Investment Strategy
Hayes underscored the cyclical nature of technological rollouts, suggesting that major infrastructural over-expansions tend to culminate in downturns. He pointed to historical downturns following significant financial crises, including the 2008 collapse, when bailouts led to a surge in crypto values. “Thankfully, we have bitcoin and other crypto to soak up that excess liquidity,” he added, advising investors to adopt a long-term view.
Demand from AI Companies
Companies like SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic are at the forefront of the increasing demand for computing power, yet Hayes noted that many of these entities are currently operating at a loss. As new data centers come online, he anticipates that infrastructure providers will seek payment for the computing resources that these companies have committed to, potentially in 2027 or 2028 when many constructions are finished.
The Potential for AI Profitability
Hayes outlined a bullish scenario where, within the next year, advancements in AI technology could render AI companies profitable. Currently, some companies supplying this AI boom, such as memory chipmakers and Nvidia, are already generating returns, although he cautioned investors to scrutinize whether the current valuations reflect reasonable multiples of their expected earnings.
New Ventures in Crypto and AI
In addition to his observations on the AI landscape, Hayes introduced his latest venture, Flop, an AI-agent payments platform set to launch in early 2027. He indicated that the increasing accessibility of computing power would enable the widespread adoption of AI agents. Flop aims to establish a marketplace for computing resources where contributors earn Flop tokens for providing GPUs and executing AI tasks.
Conclusion
With no current payments network for AI agents, Hayes’s vision for Flop is centered around creating a system where these agents can directly convert currency into computing resources. “If agents can convert a currency directly into compute, which is what they eat and consume, then they will use this currency,” Hayes noted. His analysis suggests that while the immediate landscape is marked by uncertainty, significant opportunities may emerge for those prepared to navigate the complexities of both AI and cryptocurrency markets.
