Valve’s Mike Morasky Sparks Speculation on HLX and Half-Life 3
Panel Discussion Sheds Light on Sound Design
During a recent developer panel at GameSoundCon, focused on video game audio, Mike Morasky, a long-time composer for Valve, made a notable reference to two games: Deadlock and “HLX.” The latter has not been officially revealed by Valve, leading to widespread speculation that it is the internal codename for the highly anticipated Half-Life 3.
Context of the Mention
The panel featured other Valve sound designers, including David Feise and Carlye Nyte. When asked about Source 2’s sound system, Morasky remarked:
“And in fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. You know, HLX has its own version, so on and so forth.”
This reference to HLX caught many off guard, as the name has circulated among fans primarily through years of datamining and leaks concerning Valve’s projects.
Community Reactions
Many in the gaming community are unaware of HLX due to the lack of official announcements from Valve. The codename has been a point of interest for enthusiasts who have meticulously compiled information regarding the potential next installment in the Half-Life series, presumed to be Half-Life 3. Morasky’s casual mention during the panel is significant given the context of its longstanding secrecy.
Furthermore, following his slip, audio designer David Feise appeared to respond with sarcasm, saying, “Nice work,” clearly indicating the importance of the moment.
Previous Comments and Development Progress
Morasky has a history of inadvertently revealing details related to Half-Life. He has previously mentioned working on additional Half-Life projects beyond the widely known Half-Life: Alyx, which was released in 2020. The gaming community is left to wonder whether Morasky simply forgot that HLX was still supposed to be confidential.
Reports from sources like Tyler McVicker suggest that HLX could be further along in development than many realize, with indications that it is playable from start to finish, as stated by McVicker in 2025.
Anticipation for Official Announcements
This incident raises questions about the future of HLX and whether Valve will soon provide a formal announcement. Many fans are looking ahead to the Game Awards in December, where Valve has previously indicated they may unveil new content, including potentially a long-awaited trailer for Half-Life 3.
