Power of the PlayStation 5 Pro

The PlayStation 5 Pro stands as a formidable presence in the gaming console market, boasting advanced hardware that enhances gaming experiences with high resolution and framerates. Alongside these features is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, designed to further refine visual quality.

For those interested in building a gaming PC with comparable proficiency to the PS5 Pro, identifying suitable AMD components is crucial. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X emerges as the closest match, capable of delivering similar framerates to the PS5 Pro in various gaming scenarios. Although a direct comparison is challenging due to the PS5 Pro’s custom architecture, the Ryzen 5 5600X typically provides superior performance in gaming, regularly pushing 60 frames per second (FPS) or more when paired with a compatible display.

Performance Analysis: Ryzen 5 5600X vs. PS5 Pro

The Ryzen 5 5600X showcases performance that closely mirrors that of the PlayStation 5 Pro across different games. A significant portion of the PS5 Pro’s advantages relates to its graphical capabilities, which would be facilitated by a dedicated graphics card in a desktop setup. Consequently, it doesn’t necessitate a top-tier CPU to rival Sony’s console.

For instance, in the popular title Cyberpunk 2077, both the PS5 Pro and the Ryzen 5 5600X perform admirably. Following the release of a dedicated PS5 Pro update, Digital Foundry reported that Cyberpunk 2077 achieves framerates nearing 90 FPS in performance mode; however, dips occur during intense scenes. Testing has also shown the Ryzen 5 5600X maintaining average framerates just below 90 FPS, with rates dropping to roughly 60 FPS under challenging circumstances, according to ProYamYamPC.

This performance remains steadfast even with ray tracing enabled. While multiple ray tracing settings exist within the PS5 Pro version of Cyberpunk 2077, the primary mode allows raided graphics enhancement while capping framerate at 60 FPS. Results from ProYamYamPC show that the Ryzen 5 5600X sustains around 60 FPS with ray tracing settings at Ultra, proving it to be a reliable counterpart without becoming a performance bottleneck in an equivalent PC setup.

Superior AMD Alternatives to the PS5 Pro

Higher-end CPUs can outperform the PS5 Pro for those willing to invest more in their gaming setup. With the recent price increase of the PS5 Pro to $900, many gamers may find that investing in a premium CPU is a more enticing option.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D ranks among the top gaming processors available today, consistently outperforming the PS5 Pro in various games. In a comparative study, both the PS5 Pro and Ryzen 5 5600X reported running at 60 FPS in the game Control under heavy load, while benchmarks indicated the Ryzen 7 9800X3D can exceed triple-digit framerates in demanding scenes, as shown by Testing Games.

Moreover, even less expensive processors such as the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, available at $329 compared to $479 for the 9800X3D, can deliver enhanced gaming performance. Analysis by Digital Foundry highlights that the 7700X3D can achieve average framerates above 100 FPS across various in-game areas, with minimal reductions during densely populated scenes—advantages that outweigh the PS5 Pro’s capabilities, especially with robust graphical settings, assuming a compatible graphics card is in place.
