Vermont Secures Season Opening Win Over Ranked Minnesota Duluth

Burlington, Vt. – In a stunning performance, the Vermont women’s hockey team opened their 2026-27 season with a 3-0 victory against the seventh-ranked Minnesota Duluth at Gutterson Fieldhouse. This win marked only the second time in program history that Vermont has achieved a season-opening triumph over a ranked opponent.

Morgann Skoda, Stella Retrum, and Kaylee Lewis each scored, while goaltender Tara Bach accomplished a remarkable feat, recording a total of 36 saves and her first shutout as a Catamount.

Highlights of the Match

The scoring began early, with Vermont taking the lead just 6:23 into the first period. A determined forecheck by Zoe Charland led to a turnover, setting Skoda up for an accurate shot that found the top left corner of the net. This goal not only put Vermont ahead but also marked a significant moment as it was the first time Minnesota Duluth found themselves trailing this season.

As the second period progressed, Vermont aimed to double its advantage. Lewis made a strong offensive push, passing to Lauren O’Hara whose shot rang off the post. However, the Catamounts eventually did extend their lead; with just over three minutes left in the second period, Lewis assisted Linnéa Misner, whose shot was initially saved but quickly rebounded for Retrum to convert, bringing the score to 2-0.

In the closing moments of the game, Vermont capitalized on a power play. With just 2:24 remaining, Misner facilitated a pass to Lewis, who scored with a powerful snapshot into the top left corner, securing a three-goal lead.

Game Statistics

  • Tara Bach made 36 saves, achieving her career’s fourth clean sheet.
  • Linnéa Misner registered two assists in her debut, while Retrum and Lewis each contributed a goal and an assist.
  • Lewis celebrated her 100th career game.
  • Skoda’s goal marked her 23rd career goal.
  • Rose-Marie Brochu excelled in the faceoff circle, winning 14 of 18 attempts.
  • UVM prevented Minnesota Duluth from scoring on both power play opportunities, continuing a successful streak of 32 consecutive kills.
  • The Catamounts blocked nine shots compared to Duluth’s seven.
  • This victory was Vermont’s third ever against a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

Coaches Comments

Head Coach Jim Plumer praised his team’s effort, stating, “That was as a complete a game as we can play. We set the tone right from the start by playing in the offensive zone and getting the first goal. We got contributions up and down the lineup and of course, it all started with Tara Bach being a wall in net. It was a great way to start the season, now we’ve got to regroup and be ready for round two tomorrow.”

Looking Ahead

Vermont prepares for a rematch against Minnesota Duluth the following day, Saturday, October 3, at 1 p.m., also at Gutterson Fieldhouse, broadcast live on ESPN+. The first 500 fans will be eligible to receive free co-branded T-shirts, courtesy of TD, who will also have a presence at the event.

Additionally, the program invites alumni to return for a special weekend on November 6-7, featuring an alumnae game, a family skate, and social gatherings. More details are available at this link.
