Quakers and Bears Share the Spoils in Thrilling 2-2 Draw

PHILADELPHIA – In an intense clash at Rhodes Field, the University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team managed to secure their first Ivy League point of the season after battling to a 2-2 draw against Brown University. The match highlighted a dynamic performance from the Quakers, who fought back from a second-half deficit to briefly claim the lead.

Match Highlights

The Quakers (5-4-2, 0-1-1 Ivy League) showcased their resilience with two goals from Abbey Cook, marking her first career multi-goal game. Teammates Magali Capdevila, Lily White, and Avery Chapel contributed by providing assists. This matchup was crucial for Penn as it granted them their inaugural point in conference play this season.

Key Performances

  • Abbey Cook: Scored both goals for Penn, bringing her season tally to four, which ties her with Mia Fuss for the team lead in goals. Both players also have nine points each.
  • Josephine Hensley: Made her debut in goal, recording five saves during the match.
  • Assists: White’s assist on Cook’s first goal was her fourth this season, while Capdevila’s three assists place her right behind White on the team’s leaderboard.

Match Progression

The match began with Brown applying pressure early on, earning two corner kicks in the first few minutes, with Hensley making her first save shortly thereafter. Penn’s best opportunity in the first half came from Cook, whose shot in the 11th minute narrowly missed the goal.

Despite Brown’s offensive efforts, including several shots on target, Hensley and the Quaker defense successfully maintained a 0-0 scoreline as the teams entered halftime.

As the second half commenced, it was evident that Penn was more aggressive in their attacks, with Capdevila testing Brown’s goalkeeper, Addison Etter, soon after the break. The Bears, however, struck first in the 57th minute when Megan Birtwistle headed home a corner kick from Joy Okonye, giving them a 1-0 lead.

Penn quickly responded just six minutes later; after a strategic play that involved White securing possession and assisting Cook, she netted the equalizer. Cook’s momentum continued as she contributed a second goal in the 76th minute, converting a scramble in the box following a corner kick.

Nevertheless, Brown refused to back down. In the closing minutes, they pressed for an equalizer and were rewarded in the 87th minute when Birtwistle scored her second goal of the night from a free kick, bringing the match to a 2-2 stalemate.

  • Shots: Penn 9, Brown 15
  • Shots on Target: Penn 6, Brown 7
