Deadly Drone Attack Strikes Train Station in Dnipro
In a tragic escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a Russian drone strike on a train station in Dnipro resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, officials reported. The attack occurred as a jet-powered drone impacted the platform where a train was about to depart for Zaporizhzhia, according to Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia.
Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha noted on Telegram that an additional 14 people sustained injuries, with six in critical condition, including an 11-year-old boy.
Ukraine’s Response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault as “horrific,” questioning the rationale behind Russia’s ongoing terrorist activities following the lifting of sanctions on certain Russian oligarchs and sectors. “Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted?” he wrote on X.
Additional Attacks and Strikes
The violence extended beyond Dnipro, as Russian strikes also targeted Kharkiv, damaging educational institutions. Ukrainian authorities reported multiple Russian attacks throughout the night, including an incident in the Rivne region that resulted in one fatality.
Russian sources claimed their military struck a Ukrainian cargo vessel in the Black Sea, heightening the conflict’s intensity.
Drone Assaults on Moscow
On the Russian front, Moscow faced a significant drone barrage comprised of 613 drones, most of which were reportedly intercepted by Russian air defense forces. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin indicated that 231 of the drones were destroyed before reaching the city, with others neutralized farther away.
The Kremlin criticized Kyiv’s targeting of Moscow, particularly as the city hosted more than 22 African leaders at a summit. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed bewilderment over the timing of these deliberate attacks.
Impact of the Conflict
The ongoing conflict has led to a notable rise in drone assaults, with each side amplifying its attacks in recent months. This escalation comes just ahead of anticipated peace talks, mediated by the United States, planned for next month.
On a humanitarian note, a Ukrainian delegation is currently in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky, where a localized ceasefire is in effect to facilitate aid to remaining residents.
So far, both nations report no violations of the ceasefire, which began earlier in the week, allowing for a brief respite amid the violence.
