Massive Potential Breach at Binance: Over $5.5 Billion in Crypto Moved
A significant amount of cryptocurrency, estimated at over $5.57 billion, has been withdrawn from wallets associated with Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world. This alarming development has prompted investigations into what might be a major breach.
Investigation Underway
While Binance has yet to officially confirm a hacking event, the exchange acknowledged a “potential security issue” and is actively conducting an investigation. They have stated, “We have not confirmed any impact to user funds,” and reassured users that their security teams are scrutinizing all relevant information.
Details of the Withdrawals
The reported withdrawals primarily originated from Binance’s hot wallets—those connected to the internet for processing customer transactions. The breakdown of the funds withdrawn includes:
- $3.51 billion in Ethereum
- $1.44 billion in Bitcoin (approximately 18,270 BTC)
- $630 million in Tron
The first notable transaction occurred at 20:24 UTC, involving the transfer of 167,464 ETH and other tokens to a newly created address. Among these transfers was an inclusion of 1.615 billion USDT, a stablecoin typically pegged to the US dollar.
Technical Insights into the Incident
Notably, the attack appears to have employed advanced techniques. A delegation using EIP-7702—a feature that allows a regular wallet to execute smart contract code—was observed. This gives the potential for subsequent transactions without needing another signature from the wallet.
One area of concern remains how the attacker acquired the necessary signature, which is still not clear at this point. In a rapid response, Tether froze $975.1 million in USDT linked to the incident, while Circle, the issuer of USDC, froze an additional $823 million, bringing the total frozen assets to approximately $1.8 billion.
Community Response
In light of these developments, industry stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire noted, “Circle is closely tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance,” confirming cooperation with law enforcement regarding the investigation.
The impact of these events on the cryptocurrency market has already begun, with Bitcoin experiencing a slight decline, dropping to below $79,000, a decrease of about 2.6% over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, Binance’s native token, BNB, fell around 7% to approximately $699.
Historical Context
If this incident is confirmed as a hacking event, it could mark the largest cryptocurrency theft to date, far surpassing previous breaches, including the Bybit heist in February 2025, which involved around $1.5 billion. In contrast, Binance previously suffered a loss of 7,000 Bitcoin (valued at about $40 million) during a hack in 2019.
As the situation unfolds, Binance and the broader crypto community remain vigilant in addressing the implications of this possible breach.
