Binance Resumes Withdrawals Following Historic $6.3 Billion Hack
The prominent cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has resumed withdrawals for its customers in the wake of a staggering $6.3 billion (£4.7 billion) hack, which has been characterized as the largest in cryptocurrency history.
Incident Overview
The security breach occurred on Thursday, with initial investigations suggesting that a North Korean-linked group was responsible for the theft. In response, Binance temporarily halted withdrawals to conduct a thorough investigation.
Phased Reopening of Withdrawals
On Sunday, Binance announced a phased reopening of withdrawal services starting at 2 PM Singapore time. The first stage allowed users holding Ethereum, USDT, and USDC tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, along with select other tokens on the BNB Smart Chain, to withdraw their assets. Furthermore, trading for Dogecoin and Avalanche was restored later that day.
Binance confirmed that it has managed to recover 90% of the stolen funds. The remaining 10% represents tokens that are less liquid, requiring additional time for repurchase.
Company Commitment
Richard Teng, Co-CEO of Binance, assured users that the company is “committed to covering the remaining 10%” of the stolen assets, emphasizing that the financial burden of the hack would not fall on users. He stated, “Our commitment remains the same: Binance will fully cover the financial impact of the funds stolen in this incident.”
Investigation Insights
The FBI has corroborated suspicions regarding the involvement of a North Korean-affiliated group known as TraderTraitor in the hack. This group is believed to be part of the notorious Lazarus Group, which gained infamy for its cyberattacks, including a high-profile incident involving Sony Pictures in 2014.
The FBI’s statement noted that TraderTraitor is responsible for the theft and that stolen assets are being converted into Ethereum, with expectations that they will be laundered further through decentralized finance and instant swap services.
Technical Aspects of the Breach
Teng described the breach as a “complex attack,” which involved the use of a compromised laptop and malware specifically engineered to erase traces of the hackers’ activities, complicating tracking and investigation efforts.
Financial Impact
To cover losses from the breach, Binance has allocated approximately $6.34 billion from its corporate funds. This funding is drawn from a variety of sources, including a secure asset fund for users, a bitcoin reserve, its futures insurance fund, and its corporate treasury.
Market Reaction
The impact of the hack triggered notable declines in the cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin dropping nearly 5%, Ethereum falling by almost 6%, and Binance’s native token, BNB, plunging around 10%.
Future Considerations
The enormity of the attack has raised alarms about the capabilities of North Korea to illicitly acquire revenue amidst international sanctions stemming from its nuclear and missile programs. As the cryptocurrency landscape evolves, concerns surrounding the implications of advancing artificial intelligence on security protocols continue to grow.
