Bitcoin Tests Crucial 50-Week Moving Average
On Friday, Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a notable dip, approaching its essential 50-week moving average, which has implications for its long-term trend. As of the time of reporting, Bitcoin’s value hovered around $76,000, which is just 0.6% above its 50-week simple moving average (SMA) set at $75,580.
Recent Market Activity
The decline in Bitcoin’s price began on Thursday when it suffered its most substantial single-day loss since June, dropping by 5.5% from approximately $80,100 to $75,700. The price continued to fall, reaching a low of $74,720, putting it temporarily 1.1% below the average. However, it closed the day back above the moving average at $75,800.
Significance of the Moving Average
Bitcoin’s recent price movement is on the heels of its recovery above the 50-week SMA. On September 20, it closed at $81,150, with the moving average resting near $78,780—marking its first weekly close above this critical indicator since November 9, 2025.
According to Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy, the 50-week moving average historically acts as a ceiling during bear markets. He noted that in four out of five bear markets, breaking above this line indicated a significant turning point.
Potential Risks and Indicators
While the moving average serves as an important metric for traders, Galaxy cautioned that it is not infallible. Out of 13 occasions where Bitcoin crossed above the average during previous bear markets, two instances were followed by lower lows, notably during the downturn from 2021 to 2022.
As of the close on November 1, Bitcoin had managed to stay above the 50-week line for seven consecutive weeks, closing at $78,220, which was 3.3% above the moving average. As the market stands now, that buffer has diminished to less than 1%.
Current Sentiment and Future Projections
As of the latest updates, Bitcoin’s price sits at $75,990, remaining stable over the past 24 hours. Retail sentiment on platforms such as Stocktwits indicates a bearish outlook, although discussion activity has been categorized as ‘normal’ in the previous day.
Bitcoin’s performance relative to its 10-week simple moving average, which is currently $80,522, illustrates additional challenges, as it stands about 5.5% below this shorter-term indicator. The 10-week moving average recently positioned itself above the 50-week line in October but is beginning to show signs of flattening. In contrast, the 50-week average continues to decline from its high of over $100,000 observed at the beginning of the year.
Looking Ahead
The cryptocurrency market is now focused on the upcoming weekly close on November 8, which will serve as a crucial test for Bitcoin. Should it finish above the 50-week SMA, it will extend its streak to eight weeks. Conversely, a close below this threshold would raise concerns regarding a potential false breakout.
