Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Mode Returns with Remastered Mod
In 2021, the release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition delighted fans of BioWare’s iconic sci-fi RPGs. However, it notably lacked two key features: the Pinnacle Station DLC from the original game and the cooperative multiplayer mode from Mass Effect 3. Fast forward five years, and the ME3Tweaks modding group is set to fill this gap by launching a remastered mod that restores the multiplayer mode for PC users of the Legendary Edition.
Development Journey of the Multiplayer Mod
The initiative began approximately three years ago, led by modder Mgamerz, who first envisioned the project after completing a randomizer mod for the Mass Effect 2 remaster. The ME3Tweaks group previously established a strong foundation for modding within the Mass Effect environment, assisting with the development of Pinnacle Station.
“There was somebody who had shown that they could port a level when they found an unused level in Mass Effect 1’s remaster,” Mgamerz explained to Kotaku. “I was like, ‘Oh man, what if I could port that to another game?’”
After initial attempts to port a multiplayer level were made, including the Firebase Condor map, Mgamerz found that while the level did not crash the game, it needed significant improvement and a functioning game mode. After a brief hiatus, Mgamerz returned to the challenge motivated by advancements in modding tools developed for the Legendary Edition.
Collaboration with BioWare
Prior to the remaster’s launch, the ME3Tweaks group collaborated with BioWare to make the Legendary Edition more modder-friendly. While not all suggested changes were implemented due to time constraints, a few crucial adjustments were made that facilitated mod development.
“We gave them a list of some of the most awful things we have to deal with… and they snuck a few in right at the end of development for us, which has helped a lot of single-player development,” Mgamerz recalled.
Project Milan: The Revival of Multiplayer Mode
On November 7, 2023, Mgamerz created a Discord server titled Project Milan to rally ME3Tweaks members with the goal of bringing back the multiplayer experience. Development fluctuated over three years, but a working prototype emerged as early as December 2023, despite Mgamerz encountering personal challenges, including an injury.
The initial gameplay experience was basic but functional, allowing for player engagement. As the project progressed, the team aimed to redefine multiplayer, integrating new gameplay modes such as Coalition and Unified, enhancing the overall experience with diverse enemy encounters.
“It picks a quasi-random list of enemies,” explained Mgamerz, describing how the mode evolved to offer a more engaging challenge.
Enhancements and Player Choice
Although the mod retains the original progression system, it introduces new features to accommodate different player preferences. Options will allow players to choose between grinding for upgrades or starting with enhanced resources, thereby respecting players’ time.
“There’s going to be options for you to choose how much you want unlocked at the start,” Mgamerz stated.
Future updates are planned to introduce a streamlined store for players to directly purchase items using in-game currency, enhancing the gameplay experience further.
The Legacy and Future of the Multiplayer Mode
The remastered mod allows players to create private servers, freeing them from dependance on BioWare’s now-defunct servers, preserving the multiplayer experience. This move towards player independence is increasingly relevant following the closure of BioWare’s servers, which has raised concerns about long-term accessibility for Mass Effect 3 fans.
“It’s going to continue. But I don’t feel like this replaces the original,” said Mgamerz, reflecting on the project’s significance in light of the company’s dissolution. “This is my rendition of it. It builds on BioWare’s work but doesn’t replace it.”
Sharing the Experience
The launch of the multiplayer remaster mod coincides with N7 Day—a celebration for Mass Effect enthusiasts. As players come together, Mgamerz anticipates a greater spotlight on the mod, highlighting the community’s involvement and dedication to preserving the franchise’s legacy.
“I hope someone at BioWare—or former BioWare—notices,” Mgamerz concluded, reflecting on the journey of bringing the multiplayer experience back to life for fans once more.
