Miami Tops 2026 College Football Playoff Rankings

In the inaugural College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings of the 2026 season, the Miami Hurricanes have secured the No. 1 position, reflecting their undefeated record. This ranking aligns with their spot atop the AP Top 25, indicating their strong season thus far.

Key Rankings Insights

While Miami stands firm as the leading team, other rankings show a significant divergence from the AP poll. Notably, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, currently ranked No. 4 in the AP poll, have fallen to No. 11 in the CFP rankings. This marks a critical moment for Notre Dame, which aims to avoid a repeat scenario from the previous season, where they also missed the playoff cut despite a solid performance.

Implications for Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s upcoming match against Miami on Saturday is pivotal. Having lost to Miami in their season opener last year, a defeat this weekend could jeopardize their chance at a playoff berth. The Irish still have three remaining games against unranked teams: Boston College, SMU, and Syracuse. Achieving a 10-2 record may not be sufficient without a standout victory to bolster their schedule strength, as noted by CFP committee chair Hunter Yurachek.

“When you look at Notre Dame’s schedule and the wins they have versus the teams that are ahead of them, they don’t have that signature win right now,” said Yurachek on ESPN.

Ranking Comparisons

The CFP committee has placed Notre Dame behind three two-loss teams: Georgia, Utah, and Indiana. Alabama, despite its two losses, occupies the surprising fifth position, overtaking several teams, including Tennessee—who they lost to earlier in the season.

Understanding Strength of Schedule

The emphasis on strength of schedule by the CFP committee reflects ongoing discussions about its importance. Ohio State, for instance, remains at No. 12 despite two losses, attributed primarily to the absence of their quarterback, Julian Sayin, who suffered an injury. This demonstrates the committee’s focus on comprehensive performance metrics beyond mere win-loss records.

Upcoming Week 10 Matchups

Week 10 presents numerous compelling matchups that are expected to clarify the rankings landscape. Key games include:

  • No. 1 Miami vs. No. 11 Notre Dame
  • No. 2 Georgia at No. 10 Ole Miss
  • No. 3 Utah vs. No. 9 BYU
  • No. 5 Alabama at No. 14 LSU
  • No. 7 Texas at No. 18 Missouri
  • No. 13 Tennessee hosting No. 6 Kentucky

The outcomes of these games could lead to significant shifts in the rankings, potentially increasing the number of two-loss teams near the top.

Current Top 15 Rankings

As it stands, here are the top teams in the CFP rankings:

  1. Miami Hurricanes (8-0)
  2. Georgia Bulldogs (7-1)
  3. Utah Utes (8-0)
  4. Indiana Hoosiers (8-1)
  5. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2)
  6. Kentucky Wildcats (7-1)
  7. Texas Longhorns (6-2)
  8. UCLA Bruins (8-0)
  9. BYU Cougars (7-1)
  10. Ole Miss Rebels (6-2)
  11. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-1)
  12. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-2)
  13. Tennessee Volunteers (6-2)
  14. LSU Tigers (6-2)
  15. Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-1)

This ranking snapshot underscores Miami’s dominance while highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing teams like Notre Dame. As the season progresses, the implications of these rankings will play a crucial role in deciding playoff contenders.
