Florida Mother Faces Charges After Leaving Children Unattended
A mother from Florida, Irene Miller, has been charged with four counts of child endangerment after allegedly abandoning her children during a week-long work trip to Las Vegas. Authorities indicated that her four children, ages 9 to 14, were left unsupervised, except for a babysitter who provided limited oversight.
Incident Details
The situation escalated on October 21 when one of Miller’s children, a 9-year-old boy, sustained a serious injury after being struck by a falling dumbbell while attempting to build a fort at their home in Kissimmee. The boy’s condition prompted his siblings, including two brothers aged 12 and 14 and an 11-year-old sister, to call 911 for help.
Mother’s Response
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies reached Miller via phone after the emergency call, she expressed dismissiveness towards their inquiries, claiming to be busy with work. She ended the conversation abruptly. Later, she contacted her eldest son, expressing frustration that he had called for emergency assistance, stating, “Why are you calling 911? You’re going to get me in trouble,” as reported by Captain Kim Montes of the sheriff’s office.
Aftermath and Charges
Despite the incident involving her son, Miller did not return home immediately. Instead, her children, who were treated for their injuries, were placed under the care of their father, Mark Miller, despite a history of allegations of domestic abuse against him. Mark faces legal challenges stemming from past incidents involving Irene.
After returning to Florida, Irene was arrested at Orlando International Airport regarding the matter. She was released after posting a bond of $4,000.
Current Living Situation
Following the incident, the children reportedly displayed affection towards their father, highlighting a complex family dynamic. As of now, they are staying in a motel, with concerns lingering about their wellbeing and the appropriateness of their living conditions, as deputies remarked on the food scarcity in their home when they conducted their welfare check.
