Mass Effect Fans Launch Billboard Campaign Amid BioWare Closure
In the wake of BioWare’s recent closure, gaming enthusiasts are rallying behind the #SaveMassEffect campaign, seeking to advocate for the beloved franchise. A subgroup known as “We Are Mass Effect” has taken significant steps, including purchasing a billboard in the bustling Times Square, symbolizing their commitment to their cause.
Fundraising for Visibility
Fan activists Kala Elizabeth, Ariel Aguilar, and Mer established a GoFundMe campaign aimed at financing billboard displays outside the headquarters of Electronic Arts (EA) in Redwood City, as well as at the Edmonton office, which is slated for closure following the BioWare shutdown. Their efforts extended to influential events such as the upcoming Game Awards, set to be held in Los Angeles this December. Impressively, the campaign gathered the targeted $5,274 in less than 15 minutes, a figure derived from communications with billboard advertising companies.
Looking Forward
Reflecting on the swift support from the community, Mer stated, “I have no words. And we’re already brainstorming even more ways to keep this momentum going! More to come.” The group plans to finalize the dates for billboard displays as they navigate the logistical challenges ahead. With the Game Awards occurring on December 10, one billboard is aiming for that specific window to maximize exposure.
Charitable Intentions
The GoFundMe page is now closed after successfully reaching its financial goal. In a philanthropic gesture, the trio expressed intentions to donate any additional funds to the Game Worker Hardship Fund, established by United Videogame Workers-CWA, which supports developers who have lost their jobs. Mer noted the group’s efforts to communicate with the organization regarding this donation, stating, “As of right now, our intention is for any funds raised beyond our goal to be donated to the Game Workers’ Hardship Fund.”
Challenges in Charitable Distribution
Currently, the Game Worker Hardship Fund’s website indicates that there is no direct way to donate, but they are exploring future options. The organization has informed that updates about potential direct donation methods will be provided on their platform.
Community Response and Controversy
In parallel with the billboard initiative, a Change petition has garnered over 250,000 signatures, urging EA to intervene to “save” the Mass Effect series. However, this movement has sparked some controversy within the community, particularly about its suggestion to transfer the series to a new studio while not addressing the employment concerns of BioWare staff who have been laid off. This aspect has raised eyebrows among certain community members, reflecting the varying opinions present within the fanbase.
The developments in this campaign illustrate not only the passion of the Mass Effect community, but also the complexities of advocating for beloved franchises in the gaming industry.
