Bitcoin’s Projected Returns and Volatility: Insights from J.P. Morgan
In its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, released in October 2026, J.P. Morgan estimated that Bitcoin (BTC) will deliver an annual return of approximately 10% over the next decade. This projection is notably higher than their forecast of 7.5% for large U.S. stocks.
Analyzing the Outlook for Bitcoin
This forecast can be interpreted in two contrasting ways. On one hand, it suggests a comparatively pessimistic view on Bitcoin, as it significantly undercuts the asset’s remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 43.9% observed over the past four years. Conversely, the projection can also be seen as bullish, indicating that Bitcoin is anticipated to outperform all major asset classes included in the bank’s analysis over the coming years.
Understanding Bitcoin’s Volatility
J.P. Morgan anticipates that Bitcoin will experience an annual volatility of around 55%, while large U.S. stocks are expected to exhibit only 18% volatility. These figures are consistent with historical volatility patterns observed in both asset classes.
When comparing the expected returns of Bitcoin to those of stocks, both assets offer similar returns of 0.32 above holding cash per unit of volatility. This indicates that J.P. Morgan does not necessarily foresee a superior volatility-adjusted return with Bitcoin compared to stocks; rather, it points to a scenario where Bitcoin’s higher expected return comes with commensurately greater risk. For investors sensitive to large fluctuations, holding Bitcoin throughout this forecast period could prove challenging.
Factors Behind the Projections
Central to J.P. Morgan’s forecast is the observation of Bitcoin’s diminishing rate of new supply versus a continuously increasing global money supply. The organization characterizes Bitcoin as “a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing,” noting that it tends to perform better during periods when central banks expand the money supply. Although the cryptocurrency has not yet established itself as a reliable hedge against inflation, its limited supply suggests resilient purchasing power over time.
Investment Considerations for Bitcoin
This report marks the inaugural inclusion of a Bitcoin return forecast in J.P. Morgan’s analysis, yet the bank stops short of recommending a specific allocation strategy. However, it does suggest that Bitcoin has the potential to outperform traditional stocks over the next decade, making it worthy of consideration for inclusion in a diversified investment portfolio.
When considering the extent of Bitcoin investment, an analysis by BlackRock highlighted that a 2% allocation to Bitcoin in a conventional 60/40 stock-bond portfolio accounted for 5% of the total risk, with a 4% allocation increasing this to 14%. Comparatively, Morgan Stanley recommended in late 2025 that aggressive portfolios limit Bitcoin investments to a maximum of 4%.
Consequently, it would be prudent for most investors to limit their Bitcoin exposure to below 5%, especially if the inherent volatility of this digital asset may cause distress.
