LSU Women’s Basketball Sets NCAA Division I Record with Historic Win
The LSU Tigers made headlines earlier this week as they opened their college women’s basketball season in a remarkable fashion. During their second game of the season, the No. 9 ranked Tigers achieved an unprecedented 131-22 victory over Texas Southern, marking the largest margin of victory in NCAA Division I history.
Record-Breaking Performance
This monumental win surpassed the previous Division I record by a single point. The former record was held by Baylor, who defeated Winthrop 140-32 in 2016, when current head coach Kim Mulkey was at the helm of the Lady Bears.
Strategic Gameplay
Coach Mulkey effectively utilized her bench during the game, allowing seven players to participate for over 20 minutes. The offensive display included ten Tigers scoring, with seven players reaching double digits. A remarkable second quarter saw LSU outscore Texas Southern 40-0, showcasing both their offensive prowess and defensive dominance.
Standout Players
Freshman Anna Minaeva emerged as the star, leading both teams with 21 points and contributing seven rebounds from the bench. Senior guard Mikaylah Williams also shone brightly, adding 20 points to the tally.
Honoring a Former Star
The game also featured a tribute to former forward Angel Reese, who received flowers in recognition of her outstanding performance during the recent WNBA Finals.
Upcoming Challenges
Looking ahead, LSU’s early-season schedule remains relatively light as they prepare for challenging showdowns in the SEC. The team will host matches against McNeese and Denver in the coming weeks, ramping up their readiness for more competitive encounters.
LSU’s first significant test is set for late November, when they will face No. 25 NC State at home, followed by an away game against a tough North Carolina squad ranked No. 9 on December 2. They will also meet No. 2 UConn on December 20, a team that recently suffered a loss to Michigan.
With aspirations of continued success, the Tigers look to build on this record-setting performance as they progress through the season.
