Subpoenas Issued in Prince George’s County Grant Funding Investigation
LARGO, Md, (7News) — Recent developments in Prince George’s County have led to the issuance of subpoenas concerning a nonprofit organization that received over $8.5 million in taxpayer money. The subpoenas, issued by the county’s Office of Law, target Community on the Frontline, which is now under scrutiny following concerns regarding the county’s grant distribution process.
Context of the Investigation
This inquiry comes shortly after the Prince George’s County Council members called for an independent audit of Community on the Frontline and another nonprofit, Joan’s House. Although officials have not specified the documents requested or the reasons behind these subpoenas, there is mounting pressure for transparency regarding how taxpayer funds are allocated.
Financial Implications
Community on the Frontline, which was founded by a close associate of County Council Chair Krystal Oriadha, has received approximately $8.6 million in grants. Meanwhile, Joan’s House, affiliated with Councilmember Ed Burroughs, is facing a similar review, having been awarded a separate $4 million grant. As of now, there have been no indications that subpoenas have been issued to Joan’s House.
Councilmember Jolene Ivey articulated the council’s desire for clarity, stating, “We all want to get to the bottom of this and to know how did the money get there, what has happened to it since then and how did it happen in the first place.”
Recovery of Taxpayer Funds
In a related announcement, County Executive Aisha Braveboy revealed that the Edward Charles Foundation, based in California, has returned over $7.6 million linked to Community on the Frontline. County officials anticipate the return of additional funds shortly, with approximately $764,000 already expended from the initial $8.6 million granted.
Current reports indicate that nearly $7.8 million remains held by the Edward Charles Foundation or another organization, raising critical questions about the overall recovery and allocation of these funds amidst ongoing investigations into the county’s grant processes.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The investigative landscape is evolving, with 7News reaching out to Council Chair Oriadha for comments but receiving no response. Councilmember Burroughs has directed inquiries to Oriadha’s office. Meanwhile, the FBI has not confirmed nor denied involvement in any investigations related to Prince George’s County.
The issuance of subpoenas marks a significant step in uncovering how these grants were approved and whether the appropriate protocols were followed in disbursing public funds. The request for documentation and subsequent findings have yet to be disclosed, maintaining the focus on transparency and accountability within the county’s grant distribution framework.
